Kraken, Shakepay and Coinbase each pay new users a bonus for joining with a referral code. This page shows what each one really pays, what you have to do to get it, and where people get caught.
The Kraken app now shows a mystery reward of $45 to $350 CAD for both people, after a cash deposit and $200 CAD of crypto. Kraken's help article still describes a fixed $20 bonus; the app's offer is the one that applies.
Coinbase
The Coinbase app says the $30 CAD bonus arrives about 48 hours after the first transaction. In September, the wait was 5 to 15 days.
Shakepay
Shakepay updated its rewards terms. The referral bonus stays at $20 each for sign-ups since March 7, 2024.
Kraken goes up to $350 CAD, but the amount is random and starts at $45.

Questions
Is the Kraken amount really random?
Yes. The Kraken app shows a reward between $45 and $350 CAD, drawn at random, for both people.
How fast do the bonuses arrive?
Coinbase pays in about 48 hours. Shakepay usually within a day, up to 5 business days. Kraken within 14 days.
Are these bonuses taxable?
The CRA doesn't say anything about the bonus itself. Selling or trading the crypto you receive is a disposition, and generally half of the capital gain is taxable. This isn't tax advice.
